General Guidelines: 

• Your piece(s) should acknowledge the cultural, linguistic, or otherwise distinct space between two (or more!) cultures.  We aim to publish unique perspectives on isolated cultures by situating them in a new context.  Your role, as the writer, is to provide that new context.

• The audience of this journal is primarily English-speaking (at least, for the current moment).  As such, we ask that prose contain sufficient English that the text may be understood by a reader who exclusively speaks this language—please do not take this as discouragement to submit multilingual works, only that explanations of non-English terms be available for the unfamiliar reader who’s interested in the languages and cultures you write about.

• Most importantly: show us your take on an unabridged story!

Prose

• Up to 15 pages (single-spaced), in .pdf format.

• May be multilingual—please inform us of the unabridged meaning with in-text descriptions, explanations, footnotes, or you may leave it unexplained on purpose.

 

Poetry

• Up to 5 poems, in .pdf format.

• May be multilingual—please inform us of the unabridged meaning with in-text descriptions, explanations, footnotes, or you may leave it unexplained on purpose.

• If your piece is entirely in a non-English language, we’d still love to see it!  In this case, please submit a full translation of the poem, formatted as you would wish it to be published alongside the original text.  If your poem(s) are bilingual (containing English), your translation may be a full English version, translations only for non-English sections (please format the .pdf accordingly), or you may leave these non-English sections untranslated (if this is the case, please note why you chose to do this in your Writer’s Statement).  

 

Writer’s Statement (optional)

• 1-2 pages, in .pdf format.

• Briefly describe your goal in writing the piece, including the unabridged aspects of it.

• Explain any untranslatable parts of your work, be it linguistically or culturally, for our editors to have the best understanding of the work and its desired effect.

• This piece is not meant to entirely replace your piece of creative writing.  This simply allows our editors to hear more background for your work and how we can best carry the meaning you, as the writer, intend.
