Our blog, Water under the Bridge, is currently open for submissions!
We publish opinion pieces, literary criticism, short fiction, and poetry from guest writers, and submissions are accepted on a rolling basis. Our goal is to highlight the unique qualities of languages and cultures (English, and beyond!) that can enrich narratives. Show us what unabridged stories are to you!
The only requirement: explore the pieces left out of abridged stories.
General Guidelines:
-
Your piece(s) should acknowledge the cultural, linguistic, or otherwise distinct space between two (or more!) cultures. We aim to publish unique perspectives on isolated cultures by situating them in a new context. Your role, as the writer, is to provide that new context.
-
The audience of this journal is primarily English-speaking (at least, for the current moment). As such, we ask that prose contain sufficient English that the text may be understood by a reader who exclusively speaks this language—please do not take this as discouragement to submit multilingual works, only that explanations of non-English terms be available for the unfamiliar reader who’s interested in the languages and cultures you write about.
-
All work must be written by you; we do not publish any AI or AI-assisted writing
Blog Submission Guidelines:
Categories: Opinion, Literary Criticism, Poetry, & Prose,
-
Submissions may not exceed 2000 words.
-
Documents must be submitted in .pdf format.
-
Poetry & Prose: may be multilingual--please inform us of the unabridged meaning with in-text descriptions, explanations, footnotes, or you may leave it unexplained on purpose, but please note that for the moment, this journal is designed for an English-speaking reader who is curious about exploring the cultures & languages you write about.
-
We accept previously published work only if it was self-published online (e.g. personal blog, social media), not by any other official publication.
-
You are welcome to submit multiple pieces! (Limit: 4 pieces across the four above genres per writer) (Note: submission limit to the blog is separate from issue 01 of unabridged)
-
Simultaneous submissions are allowed; but please let us know if your work has been accepted elsewhere as soon as possible.
